Dagaalka Itoobiya: Ciidamada dowladda iyo kuwa TPLF ayaa isku dhexmaraya gobollada Tigray, Amhara iyo Afar
Dagaal cusub oo ka dhex socda dalka Itoobiya ayaa sii kordhaya kadib markii shan sano ka hor la gaaray heshiis nabadeed oo dhamaaday dagaalkii labo sano ee Tigray. Ciidamada dowladda ayaa sheegay inay gacanta ku dhigeen magaalada Alamata, halka ciidamada TPLF-ka ay ku biireen gobolka Afar.
Goobaha dagaalku ka socdo
Dagaalku wuxuu ku dhacayaa saddex gobol oo waqooyi ku yaalla Itoobiya, iyadoo ciidamada dowladda ay gacanta ku dhigeen magaalada Alamata, oo ka tirsan gobolka Tigray, halkaas oo ku dhow caasimadda gobolka ee Mekelle. Ciidamada dowladda ayaa sheegay inay gacanta ku dhigeen magaaladaas September 28, iyadoo ciidamada TPLF-ka ay ku biireen gobolka Afar.
Dagaalku wuxuu sidoo kale ka socdaa waqooyiga gobolka Amhara, halkaas oo ciidamada dowladda ay dib u soo laabteen magaalooyinka Kobo, Gidan iyo Sekota. Ciidamada TPLF-ka iyo ururka Ugugumo ee Afar ayaa ku biireen gobolka Afar, iyadoo dagaalku ka socdo dhinaca badda iyo meelaha Erebti iyo Abala.
Xubnaha ururka cusub ee dagaalka
Shan iyo toban urur oo siyaasadeed iyo ciidan ah ayaa September 20 ku dhawaaqay ururka 'Alliance for Survival', oo ujeedkiisu yahay inay dowladda Abiy Ahmed ka saaraan xilka. Xubnaha ugu muhiimsan ee ururka waa TPLF, Amhara Fano National Movement, iyo Oromo Liberation Army (OLA).
Sidoo kale, September 25, ururka Sidama National Liberation Front ayaa ku biiray, halka ururka Gumuz Peoples' Democratic Movement uu sheegay inuu ka baxay. ACLED ayaa sheegtay in saddex xubnood oo kaliya ay dagaal ka wadaan ciidamada dowladda.
Sababta dagaalku ka dhex dhacay
Dagaalku wuxuu ka dhashay khilaafaad siyaasadeed iyo deegaan ah oo ka dhex dhacay Itoobiya kadib dagaalkii Tigray. Ciidamada dowladda ayaa sheegay inay dagaal ka wadaan ciidamada TPLF-ka, halka TPLF-ku uu sheegay inuu dagaal difaac ah ka wado.
Dowladda Itoobiya ayaa sheegtay in Eritrea, Suudaan iyo Masar ay taageeraan ururada ciidamada, halka dalalkaas ay ka digeen inay ku eedeeyeen. Dagaalku wuxuu sii kordhay September 23, iyadoo ciidamada TPLF-ka ay gacanta ku dhigeen garoomada Mekelle, Axum iyo Shire.
Violence has intensified across northern Ethiopia, nearly four years after a peace deal ended a devastating two-year war in Tigray. Government-aligned forces say they captured the strategic town of Alamata on September 28, while Tigrayan forces have pushed into neighbouring Afar, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.
Where the Fighting Is Concentrated
Fighting is concentrated in three northern regions: Tigray, Amhara and Afar. In southern Tigray, government forces and their allies have taken Alamata, a strategic town about 120km south of the regional capital, Mekelle. On September 22, between 15 and 17 drone strikes hit Alamata, including several schools and a hospital, according to the conflict monitor ACLED.
To the west, a separate front has opened near the Tekeze River in western Tigray, an area disputed between Tigray and Amhara. Fighting has also spread into northern Amhara, around Kobo and Gidan in North Wello zone and Sekota in Wag Hemra zone, which government forces retook on September 27. Further east, Tigrayan forces and the Afar armed group Ugugumo have advanced into Afar, where fighting has been reported along the Tigray-Afar border and around Erebti and Abala.
The Alliance Against Abiy's Government
Seven Ethiopian armed and political groups announced an alliance on September 20 aimed at removing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government and establishing an inclusive transitional government. The group is called the Ethiopian Peoples' Forces Alliance for Survival, or the Alliance for Survival. Its main military force is the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), whose fighters launched the latest offensive.
The alliance's membership is contested. According to Jalale Getachew Birru, senior East Africa analyst at ACLED, the Gumuz Peoples' Democratic Movement has denied joining, saying it has no armed wing. The ONLF is split: one faction backs the alliance, while another says it is not part of it. The OLA has indicated that its main interest is removing the government rather than joining coordinated military operations.
How the Conflict Escalated
The renewed fighting stems from political and territorial tensions left unresolved following Ethiopia's 2020-2022 Tigray war. According to the conflict monitor ACLED, clashes between Tigrayan and federal forces began near the Sudanese border on August 1, followed by federal drone strikes and Tigrayan troop deployments. In September, Tigrayan forces moved tanks and artillery south.
Three days later, on September 23, fighting escalated sharply. Tigrayan forces seized the airports in Mekelle, Axum and Shire and pushed into neighbouring Afar and Amhara. The government says the TPLF launched an 'all-out offensive'. The TPLF says it is fighting a 'defensive war' and accuses federal forces of attacking with aircraft, drones and artillery.
