Members of Somalia’s House of the People have elected a new speaker following a contest between two candidates.
Wararka Soomaaliya
MP Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jama won the election with 142 votes, defeating fellow MP Abdulkadir Omar Moallim Daada, who received 30 votes, according to the First Deputy Speaker of the House of the People, Sadia Yasin.
Following the announcement of the results, Somalia’s Chief Justice, Baashe Yusuf Ahmed, swore in Mr Jama as the new Speaker, allowing him to formally assume the position.
Mr Jama replaces the previous speaker and is expected to lead the House of the People at a politically sensitive time for Somalia.
Faahfaahinta
The election comes as Somalia faces continued political disagreements over the country’s electoral process. The mandate of the Federal Parliament expired in April this year, while disagreements remain between the federal government, the country’s regional administrations and opposition groups over how the next national elections should be conducted.
The dispute has raised concerns about Somalia’s political stability and the timing of the country’s next elections, with key stakeholders yet to reach agreement on the way forward.
