AU chief calls for sustainable funding for Somalia mission

The chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has called for stronger international support and sustainable financing for the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

Mr Youssouf was speaking at the second Extraordinary Summit of the mission’s troop-contributing countries, held in Kampala, Uganda, alongside leaders of the Federal Government of Somalia and other African leaders.

He said the AU remained committed to supporting Somalia’s efforts to achieve lasting peace, security and development, while stressing the importance of Somali leadership and ownership of the country’s stabilisation agenda.

Mr Youssouf urged international partners to work more closely with the AU to secure “predictable, adequate and sustainable financing” for AUSSOM.

The mission is supporting Somalia’s efforts to strengthen security and state institutions as the country works towards greater stability.

The AU Commission chair also praised the countries contributing troops and personnel to the mission, recognising what he described as the bravery, professionalism and sacrifice of military, police and civilian personnel serving in Somalia.

He thanked Uganda and President Yoweri Museveni for hosting the summit, and praised the country’s longstanding contribution to peace and security efforts in Somalia and the wider region.

Mr Youssouf also held talks with President Museveni on the situation in the Great Lakes region and South Sudan.

The two discussed the need for continued regional engagement and inclusive dialogue aimed at achieving sustainable peace and stability in both areas.

The summit comes as the AU and Somalia seek to strengthen regional and international cooperation in support of the country’s long-term security and state-building efforts.
