Amazon Billing Glitch Sends Customers Shocking Bills

A technical glitch affecting Amazon Web Services (AWS) billing operation has triggered widespread panic among customers, with some receiving bills running into the billions of dollars.

Unexpected Charges Appear

One of the affected individuals, Bill Radjewski, who runs CollegeFootballData.com, awoke to an email alert informing him of a staggering $1.5 billion in AWS charges for August. His monthly bills over the past six years had never exceeded $0.02.

Social Media Outrage

Social media is flooded with complaints from users receiving equally shocking bills. Some of the figures mentioned include $22 billion, $75 billion, and even $110 billion. One user expressed his disbelief, writing, “Blud why did you hit me with a cost of 5 million USD what did I even do?”

AWS Response and Resolution

Amazon spokesperson Aisha Johnson referred inquiries to the AWS Service Health Dashboard. The company acknowledged an issue with estimated billing data since July 16 at 10:38 PM ET. The root cause was identified as an issue with unit pricing within the estimated billing computation subsystem.

AWS has rolled back the recent billing change and is attempting to revert to the previous estimated bill computation. Estimated billing computations have been paused until the issue is resolved.

The company estimates the problem will be fixed by the weekend. Customers are advised to take no action at this time.
