China Signals Possible Return of U.S. Trade Privileges for Hong Kong

HONG KONG – China hinted on Friday that the United States could reinstate Hong Kong’s special trading status, indicating Washington has abandoned its plan to permanently revoke the city’s preferential privileges.

The Commerce Ministry confirmed the U.S. has formally confirmed the lapse of the President’s Executive Order on Hong Kong Normalization, which had stripped the city of its unique trading advantages.

“The U.S. side’s actions represent an important step in fulfilling the consensus reached during the bilateral economic and trade talks,” the statement read.

The move comes after months of escalating tensions between the U.S. and China, with the latter implementing a controversial national security law in Hong Kong in 2020. The law has been criticized for undermining the city’s autonomy and curtailing civil liberties.

Implications Remain Unclear

The ramifications of the decision remain unclear, with the White House directing inquiries to the Treasury Department. The Office of Foreign Assets Control confirmed the termination of sanctions related to the executive order but added several prominent figures to a different sanctions list.

Potential Diplomatic Warmth

The about-face could potentially ease tensions between the two superpowers, especially with Chinese President Xi Jinping expected to visit the U.S. later this year. Earlier this month, Trump intervened in the case of a detained pastor in China, leading to his release.

Hong Kong Responds

The Hong Kong government expressed cautious optimism, emphasizing the importance of upholding both Chinese sovereignty and the rule of law. It called for the resumption of normal economic and trade relations with the U.S.
