FIFA Considers Expanding Men’s World Cup to 64 Teams

FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed that football’s governing body will discuss expanding the men’s World Cup to 64 teams following the 2026 tournament. This move aims to provide every nation with the opportunity to dream of participating in the world’s biggest football event.

The 2026 World Cup in North America will feature 48 teams, up from 32 in previous tournaments. Infantino hinted at a potential further expansion after 2026, stating, “This is certainly an issue that will be looked at and discussed in the relevant committees after this World Cup.”

Infantino emphasized the importance of inclusivity in the World Cup, arguing that it should not be limited to Europe and South America. He believes that smaller countries should have the chance to participate and be motivated to improve their football programs.

The idea of a 64-team World Cup first emerged in March 2025, when the South American confederation CONMEBOL proposed expanding the 2030 tournament. This proposal was discussed during a meeting between Infantino and CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez in New York.

However, not everyone is convinced about the expansion. Concacaf president Victor Montagliani expressed his doubts, while UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin previously described the proposal as “a bad idea.”
