Guinea: Autism Awareness Rises
Kazaliou Baldé’s parents in Guinea initially worried about him due to his avoidance of eye contact and communication difficulties. When he displayed physical impairments, they sought traditional healing but later took him to a hospital in Conakry, where he was diagnosed with autism.
Challenges and Support
The disorder, widely misunderstood in Guinea, led to social isolation and verbal abuse from neighbours. Despite the challenges, Kazaliou’s mother continued caring for him, even selling at the market despite his difficulties.
Lack of Awareness and Support
Autism spectrum disorder affects individuals in various ways, including learning and social skills delays. Lack of awareness and government support in Guinea perpetuates misconceptions, with some attributing the condition to evil spirits.
Limited Resources
The limited resources for autistic individuals in Guinea are reflected in the high cost of special schools, which many families cannot afford. Advocacy groups and free schools are providing some hope for affected families.
