A diplomatic row has erupted between South Africa and Ghana over claims that a Ghanaian man was killed during anti-migrant protests in South Africa, which the South African government denies.
South African Authorities Respond
South Africa’s justice minister expressed concern about Ghanaian authorities communicating false information regarding irregular migration.
Investigation Underway
The South African police said they are investigating the killing of a 35-year-old Ghanaian, Kwabena Boagen, allegedly in an extortion-linked crime in a different Cape Town township.
Ghana’s Response
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs ministry expressed shock over the killing and demanded a full investigation leading to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.
The Ghanaian authorities also urged South Africa to abide by its international obligations to guarantee the safety and rights of foreign nationals.
