Google’s Energy Consumption Skyrockets, But Emissions Dip

Published:

Google Reports Massive Increase in Electricity Usage

Google revealed that its annual electricity consumption surged by 37 percent in 2025, the most significant rise in the company’s history. This surge is attributed to the ongoing expansion of AI data centers in Silicon Valley.

Clean Energy Purchases Maintain Emissions Reduction

Despite the significant increase in energy use, Google managed to maintain operational carbon emissions at the same level as the previous year by continuing to procure vast amounts of renewable energy.

Data Centers Consume More Power

Google’s data centers consumed over 42 million megawatt-hours of electricity in 2025, exceeding the electricity consumption of nations like New Zealand, Denmark, and Nigeria.

Emissions Reduction Despite Growth

Despite the surge in electricity consumption, Google reported a 2 percent reduction in operational emissions over the same period. This apparent decoupling of emissions from growth is promising, but the company emphasizes the need for increased investments in clean energy and partnerships with local stakeholders.

Supply Chain Emissions Rise

However, the company’s supply chain emissions from contracted manufacturers and suppliers increased by 25 percent due to limited access to carbon-free energy in the Asia-Pacific region. This resulted in a 18 percent rise in total emissions for the year.
