HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) – The website of Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs was hacked on Wednesday by a group identifying itself as Cyber Islamic Resistance, hours after the breakaway region’s cabinet unanimously approved a package of cooperation agreements with Israel.

The hackers replaced the ministry’s website with images of senior Houthi officials from Yemen, including the group’s military spokesperson, Yahya Al Saree. As of Thursday, the website remained offline and inaccessible.
The cyberattack came days after Yemen’s Houthi movement warned that Somaliland would become a target for its missiles if the breakaway region allowed Israel to establish a military presence on its territory. The Houthis described such a move as a “red line.”
The warning followed reports alleging that Israel had secretly deployed a special unit of 50 soldiers to Somaliland, most of them of African descent. Other reports also alleged that Israel had established an intelligence base in the region and was planning to build a naval base to counter Houthi threats to commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

On Wednesday, Somaliland’s cabinet unanimously approved a “joint declaration” with Israel that includes a number of cooperation agreements.
President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro said all 40 ministers who attended the cabinet meeting voted in favor of the agreements, with none opposing or abstaining.
According to Irro, the agreements cover cooperation in agriculture, water and health development, sectors he said are essential to improving the lives of Somaliland’s citizens.

Somaliland authorities have not commented on the hacking of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website and have not said whether they suspect Houthi involvement or any other group in the cyberattack.
The timing of the breach has drawn attention because it occurred only hours after the cabinet approved the cooperation agreements with Israel and amid heightened regional tensions following recent Houthi warnings over any Israeli military presence in Somaliland.
