Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali federal lawmakers on Wednesday elected MP Abdi Ibrahim Warsame, known as MP Qawdhan, as the new chair of the Budget, Finance, Planning, and Oversight Committee in the House of the People.
Qawdhan replaces MP Mohamed Farah Nuun, who vacated the position after being appointed Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation earlier this month.
The election was held at the committee’s office in Villa Hargeisa, the official seat of Somalia’s parliamentary leadership. Members of the committee cast their votes during an internal session to select new leadership amid ongoing budgetary and institutional reforms.
Following his election, Qawdhan thanked his colleagues for their confidence and called for cooperation in fulfilling the committee’s oversight mandate. “I pray that God will ease this responsibility and allow us to serve our country with transparency and diligence,” he said.
Deputy Speaker of the House, Abdullahi Omar Abshirow, welcomed the new chair and urged the committee to accelerate its work in reviewing national spending and ensuring government accountability. He encouraged all members to support the chair in achieving the committee’s objectives.
The Budget, Finance, Planning, and Oversight Committee holds a key role in Somalia’s legislative process. It is responsible for scrutinizing the federal budget, assessing fiscal policy proposals, and ensuring transparency in public financial management.
