British counter-terrorism police have arrested a 27-year-old dual UK-Iranian national in London over a suspected plot to attack RAF Fairford, the US airbase used to strike Iran. Five other men were initially detained on Sunday but later released on bail while the probe continues.
Massive Police Operation Launched After Suspicious Activity
Police launched a major operation in the early hours of Sunday after a local farmer alerted authorities to three suspicious vans near the Gloucestershire airbase. Although petrol was found in the vehicles, investigators confirmed no improvised explosive device was present.
The Times reported that one of the men had called emergency services shortly before his arrest, adding to the complexity of the case. Five British men in their 20s were initially arrested on suspicion of terrorism and explosive offences.
Foreign State Involvement Under Active Investigation
Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing Vicki Evans stated the investigation is hugely complex, with specialist teams examining multiple lines of enquiry including possible foreign state involvement. Prime Minister Andy Burnham acknowledged the incident might have an Iranian link.
Iran dismissed accusations of involvement as baseless and summoned the British ambassador in Tehran. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said he would not have released the suspects, who were freed only under stringent conditions.
International Reactions and Ongoing Probe
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio pointed to the hands of a foreign actor in the incident, while Trump previously said those involved had planned big damage. The arrested individual is a 27-year-old dual UK-Iranian national, with a second British man, aged 26, also questioned under caution.
Searches were carried out at two properties linked to the investigation. British counter-terrorism police remain focused on all possible angles as the case unfolds.
