The unanimously approved agreement revives a 2019 deal and draws rejection from Athens and Brussels.
Libya's parliament unanimously approved a maritime agreement with Turkey on Tuesday, establishing a direct maritime economic corridor between the two countries, according to reporting by DW. Turkey's Foreign Ministry welcomed the decision. Greece and the European Union have rejected the accord.
A 2019 Deal Revived With Eastern Approval
Turkey originally agreed on the corridor with the UN-recognized Government of National Accord in western Libya in 2019. The agreement faced opposition from the rival Libyan government in the east, but the eastern parliament has now reversed its previous opposition. The corridor runs between Turkey's southern coast and Libya's northern coast.
Energy Reserves and Greek Objections
Large oil and gas deposits have recently been discovered in the region, with estimates suggesting natural gas reserves worth several hundred billion US dollars may lie beneath the seabed. Turkey and Libya aim to secure their economic rights to these resources and seek to exploit them jointly. The planned corridor disregards Greek islands such as Crete, Karpathos and Rhodes. Greece insists it holds a comprehensive exclusive economic zone around these islands and has announced its opposition.
Brussels Calls the Memorandum Null and Void
Greece's Foreign Ministry said on X that Greece firmly rejects the agreement and has EU support in doing so. According to the ministry, the EU has described the Turkish-Libyan memorandum as null and void, saying it violates the sovereign rights of third states and is not consistent with the Law of the Sea. Kaja Kallas, the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, posted on X: "I raised yesterday's Libyan vote on a maritime MoU with Türkiye and stressed that it infringes upon the sovereign rights of third states."
