SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (HOL) — A Somali national convicted of attempted murder in a 2021 convenience store shooting in Utah has been arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and is now facing deportation proceedings.

ICE’s Salt Lake City field office announced the arrest of 24-year-old Jibril Ali Ahmed earlier this week in Murray, Utah. Officials said Ahmed, who is believed to have ties to the Bloods street gang, had been living in the U.S. when he was convicted on multiple felony charges following a violent altercation at a 7-Eleven store in Millcreek.

According to police records and court documents, the April 2021 incident began when Ahmed and another individual attempted to make a purchase with a declined card. After a verbal dispute with the store clerk, Ahmed pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired six shots, aiming at the clerk’s head. The clerk managed to duck and avoid injury, but the store sustained heavy damage from the gunfire.

“Charging documents state that when police arrived, they found one of the store’s doors ‘heavily damaged from gunfire,’ several shell casings inside the store, and ‘bullet holes around the front clerk counter,’” local news outlet Deseret News reported at the time.

Ahmed fled the scene, but surveillance footage and vehicle tracking helped police identify and arrest him. He later told investigators he had been high on MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, and did not recall the shooting. He also admitted to stealing the firearm from a friend.

Court records show he was convicted of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and rioting. It remains unclear why deportation proceedings were not initiated earlier following his conviction.

The arrest was shared publicly on ICE’s social media platform X, accompanied by Ahmed’s photo and a list of charges. ICE said it continues to prioritize the removal of non-citizens who pose a risk to public safety.

As of Tuesday, Ahmed remained in ICE custody pending immigration court proceedings. No deportation date has been announced.
