Saudi Arabia, alongside a coalition of Arab and Islamic nations, has issued a strong condemnation of Somaliland’s decision to open what it describes as a diplomatic mission in occupied Jerusalem, calling the move both illegal and unacceptable under international law.
The Saudi foreign ministry, joined by officials from across the Arab League, said the embassy undermines the rights of the Palestinian people and violates long-standing international consensus on the status of Jerusalem.
The move by Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia seeking international recognition, has drawn sharp criticism from Muslim-majority nations who view any diplomatic presence in Jerusalem as legitimizing Israeli claims over the contested city.
Israel has cultivated ties with Somaliland as part of its broader strategy to build alliances in the Horn of Africa, but Arab states warn that such actions destabilize an already volatile region.
Somaliland has not yet formally responded to the criticism, having previously defended its right to pursue independent foreign relations.
