Satlyt, a startup co-founded by former Google and SpaceX engineer Rama Afullo, has raised $8 million in seed funding to develop AI software that runs on satellites. The company is set to launch its technology on a SpaceX rocket this week alongside Google's Project Suncatcher prototype.
A New Approach to Space Computing
Unlike SpaceX or Google, Satlyt is not building its own spacecraft. Instead, the company is developing software that enables AI models to operate on satellites, similar to how VMware and Snowflake provide platforms for complex computing tasks. Afullo described the approach as building an open ecosystem, comparing it to Android versus the iPhone.
The company's headquarters are in Sunnyvale, California, and Nairobi, Kenya. Satlyt has already flown its software on two demonstration missions, with the initial focus on improving operational efficiencies for spacecraft by reducing reliance on ground-based flight controllers.
Demonstrating AI Efficiency in Orbit
Earlier this year, Satlyt deployed Google DeepMind's Gemma AI model on a spacecraft operated by Momentus. The model reduced the size of transmissions related to onboard software errors by more than 60%, a level of efficiency that could save hundreds of thousands of dollars per satellite annually.
This week's launch will deploy Satlyt's software on a spacecraft built by Indian startup TakeMe2Space. The mission involves three customers: NASA, which is testing cloud computing protocols in space; Stellerian, a space surveillance startup; and TakeMe2Space itself.
Funding and Future Growth Plans
Satlyt's $8 million seed round was led by Non Sibi Ventures, a Houston-based firm where partner Bernard Harris served as a NASA astronaut for over 20 years. The investment was partly driven by the belief that Satlyt does not depend on the uncertain economics of orbital data centers.
Afullo aims to be live on 20% of satellites by the end of the decade, expecting virtually every spacecraft builder to include GPUs and advanced processors. The company is also among dozens of startups appearing at TechCrunch's Disrupt event in San Francisco from October 13-15.
