President Donald Trump and top executives from major artificial intelligence firms signed a voluntary accord at the White House on Tuesday, pledging internal controls, independent audits and board oversight to address growing public concern over the technology.
The Accord's Core Commitments
The agreement, posted on Truth Social late Tuesday, outlines four voluntary steps for companies to strengthen safety reviews. It requires firms to implement robust internal controls, partner with an independent external auditor, and establish a board committee to evaluate audit reports.
Trump said the pact would be morally binding and that over time, these steps might be codified into laws and regulations. He also indicated he would name an official to oversee the agreement after consulting with industry leaders in the coming days.
Trump Rejects Government Restrictions
Trump repeatedly rejected calls for government restrictions on AI development, stating he would never stifle a technology he described as bigger than the industrial revolution. He said the US government would not support guardrails or other limits on the sector.
He framed the AI race as a global competition between the United States and China, asserting there would be a winner and a loser with no second place. He added he did not want to cooperate with China because the US was already leading by a significant margin.
Industry Leaders Express Caution
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, acknowledged that the technology carries very real risks and said the mechanism for addressing those risks was still under discussion. Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company is increasingly focused on safety and is pacing its progress, sometimes choosing not to train a model.
The accord was signed by Trump alongside Amodei, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Elon Musk. Huang sat to Trump's right and Musk to his left during the luncheon meeting.
