Google is bringing Personal Intelligence to Gemini AI in cars, covering Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in. The update lets the assistant draw on information across Google apps, but Google says personalized answers require the Personal Intelligence setting and a connected phone.

What Gemini can do with your apps

With the update, Gemini can tap into user information across Google apps, including Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube and Search. Google describes several driving scenarios in which that access shapes the assistant's answers.

Google says a driver heading to the airport can ask Gemini about flight status; the assistant can pull flight details from a confirmation message in Gmail and use that information to look up the status. Users can also ask Gemini to "take me to my doctor’s appointment" instead of pulling up directions manually, or to "find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there."

Rollout and conditions

Google brought its Gemini assistant to Android Auto last year before rolling it out to cars with Google built-in in April. Several carmakers—including Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo and Polestar—have shipped newer cars with Google built-in, which adds support for native Android apps.

Google says it will connect apps to Gemini only if the user enables its Personal Intelligence setting, and will share personalized responses only if the phone is connected to the car. Personal Intelligence is rolling out to Android Auto today, with support coming to cars with Google built-in in the coming months.
