Australian actor and comedian Eddie Perfect has banned AI chatbots in his household, calling the technology 'coming for everything.' He is now adapting Molière's Tartuffe for Melbourne's Malthouse Theatre, casting the hypocritical character as a hairdressing robot.
A House Rule Against Machines
Perfect has drawn a hard line at home, stating, 'We have a rule in our house that no one talks to the machines.' He views AI as outsourcing thinking and cognition, a danger he believes is especially acute for young people. 'I really hate it because I think it's coming for everything,' he says.
He proposes a clear age threshold for access: 'Maybe everyone should have access to AI once they turn 25, and that would be perfect.' For Perfect, the creative process demands discomfort, and AI removes that essential friction. 'If you know there's AI there that can give you an answer, any answer, to stop the discomfort of not having anything on the page, then I think you've lost the game. You've got to go to the fire for creativity.'
Tartuffe as a Hairdressing Robot
Perfect is adapting Molière's classic satire for Melbourne's Malthouse Theatre, where he will also star as Orgon. He chose to reimagine the hypocritical Tartuffe as a hairdressing AI robot, driven by a love of science fiction and synthetic humans. 'I can't write anything but what I know, so what's been really fun is to meet Tartuffe where I am in my life,' he explains.
Describing the production as a 'front-footed black comedy,' Perfect aims to attract new audiences to the stage. He notes that theatre remains a communal experience where people 'voluntarily put our phones away,' making it a powerful metaphor for human connection in an age of digital distraction.
Malthouse's All-Australian 2027 Season
Perfect's show is one of eight plays in Malthouse's 2027 season, the first under artistic director Dean Bryant, who took over from Matthew Lutton in October 2025. The season is entirely Australian, with seven plays making their world premiere, including adaptations of Charlotte Wood's Stone Yard Devotional and Henry James's The Turn of the Screw.
Bryant emphasizes the importance of supporting independent theatre, saying, 'Melbourne has always had a really interesting independent scene, and they fizzle out if they don't get more of a spotlight on them. It's our job to give them that lens.' The season also features collaborations with the collective Bloomshed and debuts for young writers Yve Blake and Thomas Weatherall.
