Bloomberg reports CATL and Tencent among potential investors in one of China's largest funding rounds
DeepSeek has reportedly raised about $15 billion, or about 100 billion yuan, two days after the US ordered federal civilian agencies to remove its AI technology over security concerns, Bloomberg reported. The round is described as one of the biggest in China.
Reported investors and earlier funding
Potential investors in the reported round include Chinese battery maker CATL and Tencent, the company behind WeChat, among others, according to Bloomberg. The reported funding follows DeepSeek's June round, when it raised more than $7 billion at a valuation of $50 billion. In July, the company was reportedly seeking an additional $1.5 billion at a valuation of around $71 billion, with plans for a potential IPO in China as early as next year.
Spending plans as US restrictions persist
The Hangzhou-based AI startup is ramping up spending on AI infrastructure and open models for domestic and international markets even as it faces restrictions in the US, according to the Bloomberg report. Its expansion could further intensify competition among domestic rivals, the report said. DeepSeek did not immediately respond to a TechCrunch request for comment.
A busy period for Chinese AI funding
The reported round is the latest sign of investors pouring billions into AI companies worldwide, including in China. Kimi developer Moonshot AI secured $2 billion at a $20 billion valuation in May, and Manus AI raised more than $500 million earlier this month. Zhipu AI (Z.ai) and MiniMax, which both went public in Hong Kong in January, have market capitalizations of roughly $29 billion and $7.2 billion, respectively, as of today.
