United States defender Antonee Robinson has told the younger members of the USMNT roster to expect a far more intense atmosphere when they face Mexico on Saturday, insisting that no player should enter the match thinking it is a friendly.
Robinson and Dest Emphasize the Fierce Nature of the Rivalry
Robinson, who captained the United States for the first time in Tuesday's 4-2 victory over Chile, said the rivalry with Mexico transcends competition format. He told reporters that whether it is a qualifier, a friendly, or a Gold Cup match, the intensity remains the same and feels deeply personal. He added that the team will bring that same fire to Saturday's fixture, with no one walking into the game expecting anything less than a derby.
Teammate Sergiño Dest echoed those sentiments, describing matches against Mexico as the real culture and passion of football. Dest, who was sent off in the 2023 Concacaf Nations League semifinal, said the rivalry is one of the best in the sport and that while fights may or may not break out, the atmosphere will be amazing and the game will be tough for both sides.
Young Players Face Their First Senior Test Against El Tri
Saturday's match will see many of the USMNT's younger players face Mexico at the senior level for the first time. Heading into the international window, 13 players on the roster were uncapped, with 12 of them having at least stepped on the field against either Peru or Chile. Robinson warned that the crowd will be heavily pro-Mexico and that the intensity will be taken to another level compared to what the young boys experienced against Chile.
The Chile game itself ended in a confrontation after Leandro Hernandez jabbed his toe into the midsection of prone U.S. keeper Brian Schwake, prompting Mauricio Pochettino to step into the middle of the confrontation to defuse the situation. Robinson told the squad that they must expect that kind of fire and more when they play Mexico, and he hopes all the young players embrace the experience and are ready to put the fight in.
Training Session and Upcoming Schedule Details
At Thursday's training session, 27 of the 28 rostered players were full participants in the portion open to the media. U.S. goalkeeper Chris Brady, who was subbed off at halftime of the Chile game, was the only absentee and was limited to gym work on the side. The session provided a glimpse of the team's preparation as they gear up for the crucial Mexico fixture.
The U.S. closes out the new extended September/October international window with a game against Canada on Oct. 6. Robinson acknowledged that some of the younger players might feel nervous in such a high-stakes environment but urged them to stay calm and believe in all the abilities they have trained for over the years, adding that showing what they have is what the team needs.
