Grid Positions and Team Performance
Verstappen's teammate, Isack Hadjar, was the third fastest driver but will start eighth due to a five-place grid penalty for exceeding his seasonal engine allowance. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli qualified third alongside Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. McLaren locked out the third row of the grid, with Oscar Piastri moving up to sixth after his teammate Lando Norris pipped him to the spot. George Russell will start seventh in what was described as an alarming performance for Mercedes.
Mercedes arrived in Malaysia with a significant upgrade package, yet the team struggled to find pace. Toto Wolff admitted the car behavior was difficult to understand, noting that the hot tarmac differed from all other tracks. The team looked promising in the morning session but reverted to previous performance issues during qualifying.
Driver Reactions and Historical Context
Hamilton, who also holds one victory in Sepang, struggled with tyre degradation during practice but snatched second place from Hadjar in the final stages of qualifying. He noted the extreme heat made it a massive challenge for the tyres and mechanics, stating, 'We made so many changes through all these practice sessions because the cars are sliding, these tyres are overheating.'
Verstappen, the last driver to win a Grand Prix in Malaysia in 2017, expressed satisfaction with the result. 'It's fantastic, we've been trying for many Grands Prix to get more, sometimes a bit closer to the others. But to finally get it from where we started the season [it's] pretty incredible,' he said. Hadjar, despite the penalty, remained confident about his race prospects.
