With the Africa Cup of Nations set to return to East Africa in June 2027, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are under pressure to complete stadium and infrastructure projects ahead of schedule, though construction delays have raised concerns about readiness.
A Historic Return to East Africa
The Africa Cup of Nations will mark its first return to East Africa since 1976, with the tournament hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The competition is scheduled to kick off in June 2027, less than nine months away, prompting urgent efforts to finalise preparations across all three nations.
In September, a delegation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) visited the three host countries to assess progress on newly built infrastructure, including stadiums and training grounds. The visit aimed to gauge whether the region is on track to deliver a world-class event on time.
Kenya's Flagship Stadium Nearing Completion
In Kenya, the flagship project is the Talanta Sports International Stadium in Nairobi, which has a seating capacity of 60,000. The facility is reportedly nearing completion, though construction timelines across all three host nations have slipped behind schedule, raising questions about overall readiness.
Despite the delays, CAF President Patrice Motsepe stated on Monday that preparations were an emergency, underscoring the urgency of the situation. He also denied the possibility of relocating the tournament, insisting that the East African hosts remain committed to staging the event.
Doubts Persist Over Hosting Capability
Doubts remain over the ability of the three host countries to successfully host such a massive event, with ongoing construction delays adding to the uncertainty. While CAF has publicly ruled out relocation, reports suggest the organisation has quietly explored alternative options to ensure the tournament can proceed as planned.
According to French newspaper Le Monde, CAF has reportedly approached Morocco, South Africa and Algeria as potential alternative hosts in case the East African nations fail to meet their obligations. This development highlights the growing pressure on the original hosts to deliver on their commitments.
