Hargeisa (HOL) — A military court in Somaliland has sentenced a rickshaw driver to death for the killing of a security officer in Gabiley.

The First Degree Military Court found Salah Isaaq guilty of fatally shooting Buuh Mowlid Ismail, an officer with Somaliland’s Road Transport Forces. The verdict, delivered on Sunday, stated that Isaaq killed the officer following a dispute.

In addition to the death sentence, the court handed down prison terms ranging from four to 13 years to four other individuals found guilty of aiding the crime.

The ruling comes amid Somaliland’s tough stance on violence against security forces. On Saturday, a military court in Hargeisa sentenced a soldier to death for killing an officer, while an accomplice in that case received a 13-year prison term.

Somaliland officials have warned that any soldier or civilian convicted of killing a member of the armed forces will face the death penalty with no possibility of leniency.
