President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has issued a stern warning that Somalia will not accept an Israeli presence in the country under any circumstances. Speaking exclusively to Al Jazeera, the President stated that Mogadishu will resist any attempts to pull the nation into the Middle East's ongoing crises.
Israeli Ambitions in Berbera
In the interview, President Mohamud revealed that Israel is planning to establish a naval base in Berbera and utilize the city's airport. He described these moves as part of a broader 'Greater Israel' project aimed at positioning the nation closer to Gulf states and Iran. The President characterized Israel as a 'destabilising force' that fails to abide by international law.
Berbera is a strategic port city located on the Gulf of Aden coast in Somaliland, a self-declared republic in northwestern Somalia that Israel recognized last year. While Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has governed itself for over three decades, it has not secured recognition from any United Nations member state until Israel's recent move.
Regional Tensions and Sovereignty
The President noted that residents in the region are completely opposed to an Israeli presence, and no country other than Israel recognizes Somaliland. He emphasized that Somalia will overcome the challenges posed by these Israeli moves to protect its sovereignty.
Mohamud also addressed regional security, stating that the United States remains Somalia's strongest partner in the fight against terrorism. He confirmed that al-Shabab currently has no presence in major cities, leaving no possibility of the group taking control of the country.
