Bosaso (HOL) — Puntland security forces have arrested eight individuals, including six foreign nationals, suspected of manufacturing explosives for the ISIS group in the port city of Bosaso, officials said Sunday.
The arrests were made during a series of counter-terrorism operations targeting ISIS-linked cells in the region. According to Puntland authorities, the suspects are believed to have worked closely with a foreign operative who was killed in Bosaso while attempting to plant an explosive device.
“This operation is a major step in dismantling terrorist networks and holding perpetrators accountable,” a Puntland security spokesperson said. Further details on the detainees and the ongoing investigation will be shared in due course, the spokesperson added.
Security officials disclosed that around 100 individuals are in custody at various police stations across Bosaso. Investigations are ongoing to determine their connections to ISIS and other extremist groups, officials said.
The arrests coincide with Puntland’s recent decision to expel undocumented foreign nationals from its territories. Authorities have expressed concern over the rising number of foreign fighters joining ISIS-affiliated groups in the region. The new policy is aimed at curbing this trend and strengthening local security.
Puntland has become a critical frontline in the country’s battle against extremist groups. Its coastal cities, including Bosaso, are frequently exploited by ISIS for logistics, recruitment, and operations. The regional government has intensified its anti-terrorism efforts to combat these threats and stabilize the region.
