Kenya has reported its first-ever Ebola death after a Kenyan man who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo died upon returning home. The case marks a significant development as the virus continues to surge in eastern North Kivu province, bordering Uganda.
Patient Details and Timeline
The deceased was a Kenyan citizen who fell ill about a month ago while residing in the DRC and had received treatment there before traveling overland to Kampala. He subsequently flew to Nairobi on 3 October, where he was screened and confirmed positive for the virus. Health Minister Aden Duale stated that the man regrettably passed on last night at around 1130 in the evening (2030 GMT).
Duale described the patient's symptoms as including fever, chills, intense fatigue, weakness, muscle pain, painful swallowing, sore throat, and bleeding under the skin at injection sites. Officials have identified 28 contacts of the deceased, including family members and healthcare workers, though so far only one test has turned positive, which is the case of the man who died.
Outbreak Context and Response
Authorities are currently pursuing a further 23 passengers and four crew members who were on the same flight as the deceased, with quarantine arrangements prepared for those at risk. The Minister assured the public not to panic, noting that all systems are in place to mitigate the spread of the disease while plans for a safe and dignified burial are underway.
This incident occurs as the DRC declared its 17th Ebola outbreak in mid-May, a strain known as Bundibugyo that has killed more than 15,000 people in Africa over the past 50 years. As of 2 October, the World Health Organization recorded 4,082 deaths out of 8,463 cases since the emergence of the virus in the DRC's Ituri province.
