Kenya has confirmed its first-ever case of Ebola on October 6, 2026, involving a citizen who died after treatment at Nairobi Hospital. The patient, a Kenyan national, had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo before traveling to Uganda and then flying to Nairobi last week. Health Minister Aden Duale announced the death and the identification of 28 contacts, including family members and health workers, during a press conference.
Patient Details and Contact Tracing
The patient traveled by road from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Kampala, Uganda, before boarding a Jambojet flight to Nairobi on Saturday last week. Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the individual underwent public health screening in line with established protocols before being picked up by a relative and driven to Nairobi Hospital for isolation. The patient was subsequently transferred to the hospital's East Wing Isolation Facility, where he received treatment but succumbed to the disease.
Following the confirmation of the death, authorities have identified 28 contacts who require monitoring. These individuals include close family members and health workers who were exposed to the patient. Health Minister Aden Duale stated that the patient had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo prior to his arrival in Nairobi, highlighting the international nature of the transmission route.
Context of the DRC Outbreak
The case in Kenya is a direct result of the ongoing crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is currently battling its largest-ever Ebola outbreak. Caused by the rare Bundibugyo species, the outbreak was declared in mid-May but may have originated months earlier. Despite containment efforts, the situation has remained severe, with the central African country reporting more than 8,000 confirmed cases and over 4,000 deaths as of October 2026.
The World Health Organisation has described the current situation in the DRC as the worst Ebola outbreak ever recorded. The virus has also spread to neighboring Uganda, where 20 cases and two deaths were reported before the World Health Organization declared the country free of the disease in August. Kenya has since tightened its border screening and activated emergency centers in response to the escalating threat.
