Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed proposals for a ceasefire on long-range strikes, saying such demands are 'ridiculous' as Moscow intensifies its aerial campaign against Ukraine's energy and industrial infrastructure.
Putin Dismisses Ceasefire Proposal
Speaking at the Valdai political forum in Moscow on Thursday, Putin rejected the idea of halting long-range strikes, responding to a suggestion that Kyiv should stop hitting Russian refineries in exchange for Moscow stopping its own attacks. He described the proposal as 'simply ridiculous' and noted that Ukraine had 'partially achieved its objectives' with its strikes, which have cost Russia 1 percent of its gross domestic product.
The remarks came after a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York on September 22, during which Zelenskyy said Kyiv was ready to cease strikes on Russian energy facilities if Moscow also stopped targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
Russia Expands Strikes on Industrial Targets
Moscow has ramped up its long-range strikes, now targeting Ukraine's steel companies and supply chains, particularly in the rail sector. Ukraine accuses Russia of deliberately hitting civilian targets and keeping Kyiv in a near-constant state of alert as the country braces for another difficult winter.
On Thursday, a Russian drone struck a school in Kyiv, but no casualties were reported because children and staff were in shelters at the time. The relentless aerial attacks continue to place the Ukrainian capital under sustained pressure.
Nuclear Threat Over Kaliningrad Escalates Tensions
Putin warned the West not to escalate the standoff by threatening Russia's exclave of Kaliningrad, situated between Poland and Lithuania, and pledged to defend it with nuclear weapons if necessary. He said that if a direct attack came on Russian territory, the deployment of all available weapons would 'inevitably and immediately' be on the agenda.
His comments followed a diplomatic note from Russia to NATO warning of a nuclear response if the alliance attempted to cut off the Baltic exclave. Putin also cautioned that escalating retaliatory measures could lead to a 'fatal point of no return' for everyone involved.
