Strikes in West Kordofan and Abyei leave dozens dead as UN voices alarm over civilian toll
Sudan's army has been accused of launching drone strikes that reportedly killed more than 200 people, including mourners travelling to a funeral. The attacks in West Kordofan and the disputed Abyei region have raised tensions and prompted international concern.
West Kordofan strikes kill 150, including funeral mourners
Strikes in two areas of West Kordofan state on Sunday evening killed 150 people, according to sources told the Sudan War Observatory. A truck carrying around 200 mourners from north of Abyei was hit as it arrived in Al-Dabab, with 145 killed, while a tent at the funeral was also struck, killing five others. A further 150 people were injured.
Army drones also bombed a market in Al-Mujlad on the same evening, though the exact number of casualties there is not yet known. The Sudan War Observatory said the wave of attacks likely originated from the army-held city of Kadugli in South Kordofan. The army has not responded to the allegations but maintains it does not attack civilians.
Abyei market attack kills 73 as South Sudan protests
In Abyei, a disputed border area between Sudan and South Sudan, 73 people were killed when drones hit a market on Monday around 11:30 local time (09:30 GMT), according to the region's Information Minister Yohana Akol Ngor. A military source told the BBC the army carried out the attack, saying the market was a fuel supply site for the RSF. South Sudan has summoned Sudan's ambassador to lodge a formal protest.
Ngor said: "We were surprised by bombing and thick smoke inside Amiet Common Market, which is located 10km [six miles] from Abyei town." BBC Verify has studied satellite images showing extensive burnt buildings in the market's north-east corner and verified footage of a large smoke plume and fires. MSF's Christian Lindauer said the charity's hospital in Abyei received over 20 patients, including critical cases and burns.
UN alarm as humanitarian crisis deepens
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said on Monday: "We are alarmed by the continued deadly drone strikes across the country that are killing civilians, including children, and that are disrupting essential services." He also noted that 20 million people face acute hunger, with a rising risk of famine in parts of Darfur and Greater Kordofan.
The war has created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, killing hundreds of thousands and forcing more than 14 million from their homes. Despite a partial arms embargo, foreign countries have supplied both the army and the RSF with drones, which are increasingly the weapon of choice. A drone strike near Khartoum's airport on Monday killed four people, including three children, according to AFP.
