A review of the president's Mashujaa Day speech finds flagship promises still unfulfilled as 2.7 million face crisis-level hunger.
A year after President William Ruto pledged to make Kenya food-secure, 2.7 million people face crisis-level hunger, while the cost-of-living measure has climbed to 6.8 per cent, according to a Standard review of his Mashujaa Day speech.
Hunger and Inflation Undercut the Food-Security Promise
The review places the hunger figure and the inflation measure side by side with the president's original commitment, one year after he made it. The cost-of-living measure now stands at 6.8 per cent, and 2.7 million people are described as facing crisis-level hunger.
Both figures are drawn from the Standard's review of the speech, which assessed the pledges against conditions a year later.
Flagship Promises Remain Unfulfilled, Review Finds
According to the same review, key flagship promises remain unfulfilled. The assessment examined the commitments Ruto set out in his October 2025 Mashujaa Day address at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County.
In that address, the president outlined an ambitious agenda centred on four pillars. The review's finding is that the headline pledges tied to that agenda have not yet been delivered.
