Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has insisted that his landlocked nation must secure access to the Red Sea, a priority he reiterated while being sworn in for a new five-year term on Monday. This demand arrives as Ethiopian forces push back opposition groups in the northern Tigray region, a conflict that risks escalating into a broader regional crisis involving Eritrea, Egypt, and Sudan.
Parliamentary Speech on Strategic Necessity
During a speech in Parliament, Abiy Ahmed stated that securing a port on the Red Sea is critical to Ethiopia's civilization. He emphasized that the country would work diligently to ensure an outlet to the sea based on the principle of give and take. This assertion comes as the nation faces renewed fighting against his government, with lower-level clashes between the federal military and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) beginning in August and violating a three-year-old peace deal.
Abiy noted that the conflict in the north is backed by Eritrea, whose independence in 1993 previously blocked Addis Ababa's access to the coast. The Prime Minister's call for access is part of a wider diplomatic push, with Ethiopia accusing Eritrea, Egypt, and Sudan of supporting opposition forces in the Tigray region following the resurgence of violence.
Regional Diplomacy and Bordering State Concerns
Diplomatic efforts are intensifying as four of the five countries bordering the Red Sea—Egypt, Eritrea, Sudan, and Somalia—met on Sunday in Egypt's New Alamein. The meeting focused on the claim that oversight of the coastline is reserved for bordering states. Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud stated in an exclusive interview that while Somalia does not object to Ethiopia gaining access through its territory, the two nations must officially negotiate the arrangement.
In response to the regional gathering, Ethiopia's Foreign Ministry declared the following day that discussions regarding the Red Sea must account for the country's legitimate interests and enduring connection to the body of water. The formation of the Ethiopian Peoples' Forces Alliance for Survival, a coalition of seven armed movements including the TPLF, has further complicated the security landscape.
