Pro-Palestine demonstrations have spread across Moroccan cities as Rabat elevates its diplomatic relationship with Israel, with organisers calling for an end to normalisation amid growing public anger over the Gaza conflict.
Widespread Mobilisation Across Moroccan Cities
On September 27, the Moroccan Front for Supporting Palestine and Against Normalisation concluded three days of action with rallies in Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakesh, Tangier, Fez, Agadir, Oujda, Tetouan, Kenitra and Sale. The Moroccan Committee for Supporting the Nation's Causes reported organising 76 events in 45 cities under the slogan 'Friday for Al-Aqsa and against normalisation'.
The protests followed a September 16 announcement that Morocco and Israel would upgrade their diplomatic missions to full embassies and exchange ambassadors. Demonstrators gathered outside Parliament in Rabat and marched through main streets in Marrakesh, expressing rejection of what they described as a policy incompatible with public sentiment.
Security Crackdowns and Government Restrictions
Authorities imposed restrictions in several cities, with Tangier's local government banning a planned demonstration on September 27. Security forces dispersed hundreds of participants and detained more than 12 people, while gatherings in M'diq and Agadir were prevented from becoming marches.
The Moroccan Committee for Supporting the Nation's Causes condemned the bans, restrictions and arrests, highlighting a growing disconnect between official diplomacy and public opinion. Kathya K Berrada of the Arab Center for Research noted that normalisation is being consolidated amid unprecedented public anger over the war in Gaza.
Political Context and Public Opinion Divide
Morocco restored diplomatic relations with Israel in December 2020 under the Abraham Accords, with then-Prime Minister Saadeddine el-Othmani signing the joint declaration. The Party of Justice and Development (PJD), which was in power at the time, reaffirmed its opposition to normalisation after the September 16 announcement and later decided to remain in parliamentary opposition following the September 23 elections.
An Arab Opinion Index survey found that 89 percent of Moroccans opposed recognising Israel, while only six percent supported it. Moroccan activist Mouna Rahiani described a growing divide between state policy and popular sentiment, noting that the September agreement deepens institutional ties despite widespread public rejection.
