Somali security forces rescued the Palau-flagged oil tanker MT Honour 25 off the coast of Somalia on Tuesday, but five crew members were killed by pirates before the operation began, according to Puntland authorities.
Deadly Hijacking and Rescue
The MT Honour 25 was seized by pirates off Somalia on April 21 while carrying 18,500 barrels of oil. A rescue mission freed the vessel and captured 16 suspected pirates, but the pirates killed five crew members before security forces intervened.
Among the dead were three nationals from Pakistan, one from Myanmar and one from India. Four other crew members, three Pakistanis and one Indian, were injured during the ordeal.
Puntland Confirms Vessel Safe
The Puntland Maritime Police Force said the ship was 'safe' and under the government's control. The Information Ministry of Puntland confirmed the rescue and the capture of the suspects.
This operation follows another recent mission in which the maritime police freed the Sibu 1, a US-sanctioned tanker hijacked by Somali pirates in August.
Broader Piracy Resurgence
At least 15 attacks have been reported off Somalia since April, marking a worrying return of piracy that experts have linked in part to the effects of the United States and Israel's war on Iran.
The previous wave of piracy from 2008 to 2014 disrupted one of the world's busiest shipping routes, cost the global economy billions of dollars and resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in ransom payments.
