The government push began early Monday under air cover from the Saudi military coalition. Yemeni officials stated that allied forces retook the crucial town of Dhubab, located just north of the strait, which serves as a vital shipping route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. In addition to Dhubab, officials reported the capture of the towns of Bab and Hadeid. These officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to reporters.
Witnesses observed government tanks and forces entering the captured towns. The recapture of these locations represents a significant shift in the tactical landscape near the critical maritime chokepoint that links the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
Houthi Advances and Regional Tensions
While government forces advanced in the north, the Houthis seized the town of Turbah on Sunday. Turbah sits on a main road linking the provincial capital of Taiz with the port city of Aden, which serves as an interim seat of Yemen's government. Over the years, the town was a major post for government forces defending Taiz.
Earlier, the Houthis seized several villages and areas on Taiz's outskirts, paving the way for the rebels to encircle Taiz, Yemen's third-largest city. Video footage showed military vehicles and fighters around the city of Taiz, as families of women and small children packed up supplies and evacuated. The escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis has revived Yemen's civil war after a four-year ceasefire.
