Ethiopian federal forces have re-established full control over Mekelle, the regional capital of Tigray, following a counter-offensive that saw rebel leaders abandon the city. Fighting between the federal government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) resumed on September 23, reigniting fears of a return to the devastating civil war that claimed over 600,000 lives between 2020 and 2022.
Rebel Withdrawal and Restoration of Order
In a decisive move, Ethiopian forces entered Mekelle on Saturday without encountering resistance as TPLF leadership and troops fled the area. By Sunday, federal troops were patrolling the streets and securing key institutions, marking the first time communications had been restored in more than a week. A local journalist reported that the city was now under the complete control of the federal government.
Despite the military victory, residents expressed anxiety about the immediate aftermath. One shop owner noted the absence of police, stating that citizens had to organize themselves to ensure security. While some residents welcomed the lowering intensity of the conflict, others feared the violence could drag on or spill over into neighboring regions.
Regional Leaders Convene in Egypt
Amid the escalating tensions, the presidents of Egypt, Somalia, Sudan, and Eritrea met in El-Alamein on Sunday to discuss the risk of a wider regional war. The leaders, who all maintain difficult relations with Ethiopia, called for disputes to be resolved through peaceful means and emphasized respect for international law and non-interference in internal affairs.
Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of directly backing the Tigray rebels, with alleged support from Sudan and Egypt, though all three nations deny these claims. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi stressed that cross-border matters require cooperation rather than competition, warning against unilateral measures that could harm downstream countries, particularly regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
