Jowhar (HOL) — Somalia’s electoral commission has announced that by-elections for two vacant parliamentary seats, HOP097 and HOP098, will be held in Jowhar on Saturday, following the deaths of MP Khadija Mohamed Diiriye and MP Mohamud Mohamed Jimcale (Seeseey).
In a statement issued on Friday, the commission confirmed that traditional elder Sultan Ahmed Mohamud Osoble has submitted the official list of delegates who will cast votes to fill the two seats in accordance with Somalia’s electoral process.
The commission also disclosed the names of four candidates who have been officially registered and met the eligibility criteria to contest for the vacant positions:
- Abdikarim Mohamed Diriye – Contesting for HOP097
- Mohamed Mohamed Geeddi – Contesting for HOP097
- Abdulqadir Mohamed Mohamed – Contesting for HOP098
- Ahmed Adan Muxyadin – Contesting for HOP098
All candidates have received their certificates of candidacy ahead of the vote.
The seats were left vacant after Minister Khadija Mohamed Diiriye passed away in Djibouti in December 2023, and MP Seeseey died earlier in March 2023. Their seats in the House of the People remained unoccupied for months, prompting House Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe) to recently urge a swift by-election to maintain the parliament’s full representation.
The by-election is expected to proceed under the supervision of the Federal Electoral Implementation Team (FEIT), with representatives from political stakeholders and civil society observing the process.
